The product is a starter-sized plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. The plant will be a minimum of 6 to 8 inches tall. It will not have buds or blooms on arrival. Starter-sized plants are intended for a gardener to plant and grow to their mature size.

  • Trimezia steyermarkii, or Yellow Walking Iris, is a tropical Iris species native to Central and South America. It is prized for its vibrant yellow and brown speckled flowers and walking reproductive method. Small rooted plantlets appear on the stalks after flowering. As the plantlets grow and become heavier, the stalks bend to the soil where they put down roots and grow into new plants.
  • The plants have long, strap, lance-shaped fronds, mature to be about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall with clumping growth habit. They produce small orchid-like, lightly fragrant yellow blooms with brown speckled throats on long arching stalks in the late winter through late spring.
  • Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic soi with high organic content. Locate in partial afternoon shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture until well-established. Feed a good quality, slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter.
  • Indoor Growing: Iris are sometimes grown indoors, but require an extraordinary degree of care, planning, and modifications to provide adequate light and an appropriate range of temperature differentials to produce flowers. Since flowers are short-lived, only lasting a day or two at most, the reward vs the work required is not justified for most gardeners.
  • Climate: Recommended for outdoor growing of Zones 8, 9 and10, and 11.
